Net of Hope Team

It all started in freshman year of high school, when Gael Castrillón and Gustavo Sui partnered to develop an innovative solution to an underlying problem within Peruvian society. After months of brainstorming, research, and dedication, the team presented this initiative to their school, Colegio Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in hopes of gaining their support. They aim to develop fogcatchers as a sustainable solution to provide water to those in greatest need in Lima, Peru, where access to water remains a significant challenge. After a month of anticipation, their perseverance paid off, and they were officially recognized as a Global Issues Network (GIN) Project. Since then, the Net of Hope team has hosted a successful raffle, participated in the Holiday Bazaar, been recognized in a high-school assembly, and met with the fog-catching expert, Mr. Abel Cruz. Their efforts have sparked interest and involvement from the school community, further expanding their reach. What started as a simple dream between two high school students is turning into a reality, fueled by their hard work, dedication, and determination. With each milestone, they are one step closer to transforming lives and providing hope to those who need it most.

Gael Castrillón

Co-President and Founder

My name is Gael Castrillón. I was born in Lima, Peru, but moved to London at a young age. At the start of first grade, I returned to Lima, where I’ve lived ever since. Water has always played a vital role in my life. I learned to swim at the age of four and quickly developed a deep passion for aquatic activities, going on to representing my school, Colegio Franklin Delano Roosevelt, competing in nationals in swimming. I could never imagine my life without water. That deep connection flipped a switch in me. It broke my heart to know that something I’ve always had and loved was out of reach for so many.I realized that access to clean water is still a privilege for many families in Lima, and I couldn’t stand by and do nothing. Driven by that urgency, I co-founded an initiative to bring sustainable water solutions to underserved communities. As co-president, I bring creativity to the heart of our mission, always committed to make a positive change among our society.

Gustavo Sui

Co-President and Founder

My name is Gustavo Sui. I was born in Lima, Peru, and have had the fortune of living here all of my life. Since I was young, I’ve seen firsthand the social and economic disparity within our society. Growing up, my life revolved around football, playing it, talking about it, or watching it; complex issues such as dehydration and lack of access to necessities were not present in my life, and hence, while I acknowledged them, I did not have the drive to cultivate a meaningful change. However, growing up, I realized that having water is not a privilege everyone has, and is rather something that should be cherished. I use water for a vast array of purposes, including drinking, cooking, and cleaning; I could not imagine life without safe, potable water! Fueled by eagerness and fast-growing excitement to make a difference, I bring a nuanced set of leadership skills to make my vision a reality!
